Science and the Vaginal Microbiota

Science is forever changing and that's what makes it so interesting. The science which looks into the vaginal microbiome has also changed. Scientists now have a lot more knowledge on both the abnormal and the normal vaginal microbiome. What all scientists do agree on is that the vaginal microbiota is indeed complex and dynamic. It is comprised of over 200 bacterial species all of which the individual's genes have an influence. Other influences include environmental factors, ethnic background and behavioral influences. A number of bacteria species, lactobacilli, dominate the vaginal microbiome.

A healthy vaginal microbiome assists good health in the following ways:

  • Support a defense system (along with antibacterial substances)
  • Fights off infections
  • Cares for ordinary pregnancy thus avoiding preterm birth

The vaginal can occasionally get out of balance just like that of the gut.

This scientific extract shows how the science continues to look into the vaginal microbiome, and the ways to restore or prevent any imbalances.
